Spring Break Survival Guide

The kids may be out of school next week, but with all of these activities they'll still be busy.

Spring break is next week (April 18-22). If you’re looking for ways to entertain the kids, you’ve come to the right place. Here you’ll find enough family-friendly activities to ward off cabin fever for the entire week.

Remember, you’re an important part of this column. If you know of a fantastic event taking place over the break, and we haven’t included it here, please add it to the comments section.

Stop by Norwalk Hospital’s Kids Fest

Norwalk Hospital's Kids Fest will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Wilton High School Fieldhouse. This event will feature clowns, magicians, dancing and more. Sweet Rexie’s is the official sponsor, so you can satisfy your sweet tooth while you’re there.

Take the family on an Egg Hunt

The New Canaan Nature Center is featuring The Great Egg Hunt & Spring Celebration, a one-hour nature walk and scavenger hunt and chance to meet new bunnies and chicks. This program will take place at 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Friday and at 11:30 a.m., 1 and 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The cost is $12 per child for members and $15 per child for non-members. Pre-registration is required. Call 203-966-9577 ext. 20 to pre-register.

Stew Leonard’s is hosting a free Egg Hunt Eggs Travaganza at 5 p.m. April 19. Children under age 9 will be able to collect eggs from costumed characters throughout the store. Characters include Clover the Cow and Daphne Duck. Each egg will contain a prize. After the hunt children can have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny.

The Stamford Nature Center is holding the Heckscher Farm Egg Hunt from 10 a.m. to noon April 23, for children ages 6 and younger. Bring your own baskets and hunt for some of the hundreds of eggs that will be tucked away all over the farm. At the end of the hunt, turn in your eggs for a goody bag, play at Nature’s Playground, and visit the farm’s animals. This event is free for members and included in the cost of admission for non-members.

Calling All Superheroes

Spring break is hero week in the Norwalk Library’s children’s room!

Stop by at 4 p.m. Monday for a viewing of The Incredibles and a snack.

Enjoy Superhero Storytime at 10 a.m. April 19.

Learn some superhero recycling magic with Cyril the Sorcerer and crafts at 4 p.m. April 20.

Create a superhero shield with Crafts for All Ages at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 21.

Get in shape with Superhero Fitness at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 21, for ages 3 and up.

While you’re there, check out the new toys at the Norwalk Library. The children’s room is now home to a brand new wooden dollhouse, magnetic white board, chalkboard and traffic rug. You can check out the wooden cars to use with the rug or the dolls for the dollhouse while you’re there. See the photo gallery above for pictures of these fun new attractions.

Take a hike

It’s Take a Hike Week at the Stamford Museum and Nature Center Tuesday, April 19, Wednesday, April 20 and Thursday April 21, with guided nature hikes and fun family activities. Times of programs vary. Visit stamfordmuseum.org or call 203-977-6521 for a complete listing of specific programs and times. These programs are included with general admission. 

Westport’s Earthplace is holding a story time and trail walk at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday April 20. This is free for members or included in the price of admission for non-members.

See what a shark feels like

If you missed the Maritime Aquarium’s recent Touch a Shark exhibit, you’ll be happy to know that you’ll have another chance to discover what a shark’s skin feels like. The exhibit will revisit the Aquarium Saturday, April 16 through Sunday, April 24. Check out  for a unique view of this exhibit.

Travel to Cambodia

Stepping Stones is offering a different activity each day, with a focus on Cambodia. These events are included with general admission.

Sensational Silk - Learn about the making of silk, a textile Cambodia is famous for, on Monday, April 18, at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. 

Cambodian Kites – Come and make a kite at 11:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19.

Story Time - Listen to a Cambodian folktale at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20.

Shadow Theater – Create an elephant shadow puppet and bring it to life on a shadow screen at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21.

Create a beautifully decorated Cambodian horse at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 22.

Foster Your Child’s Creativity

Green Moon of Rowayton is holding workshops throughout the week.

Children ages 18 months through 5 years can attend one of the drop-off workshops being held Monday, April 18 and Wednesday, April 20. These workshops take place from 10 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. and cost $35 per child.

Children ages 5 and up can attend the spring workshop being held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20. The price is $35.

Stepping Stones’ Earthday celebration takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 23, with Norwalk author Jill Dunn reading her book “I Want to go Green but What Does That Mean?”
