Sign Up for Spring Break

Spring break is right around the corner, but don't panic. We'll here to help you ward off cabin fever. In addition to providing you with a planner of upcoming events, this week we spotlight some of the fantastic camps being offered during spring break.

With Norwalk schools closed Monday, April 18 to Friday, April 22 for Spring Break, now is the time to register for camp. In this week’s Grab & Go, we highlight some of the programs being offered in and around town.

Stay tuned for next week’s Spring Break Survival Guide, where we’ll suggest an array of drop-in options for those of you who prefer to be more flexible.

  • The is featuring April Vacation Adventures Program 2011. They invite kids ages 6 to 9 to “spend their spring school vacation exploring our watery world in this special series of activities.” Participants can look forward to crafts, experiments, and animal encounters, all related to the day’s theme. Parents do not need to commit to the whole week. Enroll for one day, multiple days, or the whole week, as fits your family. Download a registration form or learn more about the program here.
  • The Norwalk YMCA is premiering their 1st Annual Fitness Camp from April 18 through April 21 for kids ages 8 through 15. Activities will include indoor basketball, soccer, swimming, kickball, strength training, and more. Both full day and half day options are being offered.   • Anything goes at Kids U’s April vacation camp. Parents of children ages 3 to 7 are encouraged to “get your children out of the house and into some fun!” This camp features gymnastics, cooking, music, science, arts, sports, games, and PlayQuad time. Sign up by the day here
  • Kids can Sew, Create, and Celebrate with sewing classes for kids ages 7 and up. Sessions will take place daily from 10:30 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Projects include pillows, bags, vests, and skirts. Creativity is encouraged, and parents are welcome to attend.   • Spring into camp at The Little Gym of Westport or Darien. They are featuring morning and afternoon camps for children ages 3 through 8. Sessions include arts and crafts, group activities, special events, and snack time, all centered on a daily theme that inspires fitness and fun. This is a great opportunity for kids to build their social and motor skills. You can customize the camp to fit your schedule by signing up for as many days as you like.   • Young animal lovers in grades K-3 will appreciate Budding Ecologist afternoon program at the Stamford Nature Center’s Animal Embassy. Participants will be amazed as they learn about the living world around them.  For more or to register, click here.
  • The New Canaan Nature Center’s Spring Fling Program is perfect for enthusiastic kids ages 3 to 8. According to the website, “Each day campers will traverse the property and use all their senses to discover new features of NCNC’s springtime wonderland.” Find more information here.

We haven’t left out your grab & go planner. Here are four additional events for the upcoming week:

  • Check out the new toys at the . The children’s room is now home to a brand new wooden dollhouse, magnetic white board, chalk board, and traffic rug. You can literally check out the wooden cars to use with the rug or the dolls for the dollhouse while you’re there. See the photo gallery above for pictures of these fun new attractions.
  • Born to Be Wild Imax premiere:  The Maritime Aquarium encourages you to “Take a heartwarming journey across the world to cheer on orphaned orangutans and elephants” with the new Imax movie Born to Be Wild¸ opening April 8. Morgan Freeman narrates this film which will inspire viewers with its spotlight on places where endangered species are being saved and the people who rescue them.   • Crystal Theatre presents Perseus the Dragonslayer:  Bring the whole family on adventure to the Ben Franklin Theatre to see this production about Perseus’s journey to bring the head of Medusa to Polydectes. Performances take place Saturday, April 9 at 6:30 PM and Sunday, April 10 at 3:00 PM. Purchase tickets here.
  • Show off your Wii skills at Wii-Athlon. Wii athletes will have the chance to compete against one another this Saturday, April 9, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wii athletes must be between the ages of 7 and ten and must register here.
