Boy Scouts Clear Snow from Hydrants

Scouts from Troop 163 improved town safety in the aftermath of last weekend's blizzard.

A blizzard buried Monroe under mountains of snow on Friday and into Saturday, making roads impassable, trapping vehicles in driveways and seeming to make fire hydrants disappear.

Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 163 decided to do something about the latter, and challenged each other to clear snow away from fire hydrants all over town, making it easier for firefighters to find when responding to emergencies.

The Town Council recognized the troop for it efforts at its meeting on Monday night.

"Monroe is much safer," First Selectman Steve Vavrek said.

On Sunday, the boys used shovels on Hattertown, Blanket Meadow, Field Rock, Wells, Lazy Brook, Spinning Wheel, Fan Hill and Jockey Hollow roads, as well as Pepper and Elm streets, and West Maiden, Boot Shop and Forest lanes — among some of the terrain.

The Boy Scouts included, Julian Zeppetello, Kirill Riesinger, Sam Kealey, Garrett Kalker, Ben Townson, Ryan Iken and Colin Iken (if any Scouts were missed, let us know and we'll add their names). They worked under the direction of Scout Master Jay Huggins.

Jacob Russell also cleared a hydrant on Old Colony Road. A number of other scouts also cleared fire hydrants, but I unfortunately don't have a full list. This project was fully initiated by one of the Patrol Leaders, Kirill Riesinger, challenging the rest of the troop to get out and clear fire hydrants and help out neighbors. The flags made it very easy to find the hydrants.

Just uploaded a couple of photos, including a photo of ASM Quinlavin (one of our older scouts!) working up a sweat.

The truly impressive component of this project is that the idea originated with one of our scouts who issued a challenge to all members of Troop 163. The Scout program really works!
