Plans for Phase Two of the Norwalk River Valley Trail Underway

Plans are being developed by the City of Norwalk for a multi-purpose trail between Union Park and New Canaan Avenue.

The one-mile-long, 12-feet-wide bituminous concrete trail will run along the Norwalk River and Route 7 corridor. It will connect two existing pieces of the Norwalk River Valley Trail, a 27-mile recreational trail being built from Calf Pasture Beach to Danbury, according to a July 10 press release.

The Norwalk River Valley Trail is not expected to be completed for more than a decade.

Planning for the new portion of the trail is in the preliminary design stage and has been recommended for construction under the Surface Transportation Program, which provides urban funding administered by the Connecticut Department of Transportation, according to the release.

Construction will cost approximately $2.9 million. Planners anticipate that 80 percent of that cost will be provided by the Federal Highway Administration with Norwalk providing the remainder, according to the release.

There will be an informational meeting July 30 at 7 p.m. at Norwalk City Hall, and representatives will also be able to answer questions about the project beginning at 5 p.m.
