News from Far Afield: Deer Crashes through Restaurant Window

Across Long Island Sound, in Patchogue, a deer makes his way inside a restaurant, creating minor mayhem.

Occasionally at Patch we share weird or interesting news from far afield in Patchland.

Last month we shared a story about the Romneys' efforts to demolish a house in La Jolla, California and replace it with a larger one.

Today we share a quirky story from Patchogue Patch by local editor Michael Sorrentino that garnered 503 Facebook likes. Don't worry. The deer is okay in the end.

Frank Mills, the co-owner of Harbor Crab Company Restaurant and Marina in Patchogue, thought that his restaurant might have been robbed when he received a call Thursday morning stating that the front window of his restaurant was smashed.

Upon arrival from his home in Blue Point, he discovered the intruder to be a deer that was being held captive by two of his employees, who according to a Newsday report, had to wrestle the animal to the ground and tie it with an electrical cord.

According to the report Suffolk County police and town animal control officers arrived at the restaurant and released the deer after determining it was not hurt.

The deer smashed through a front window and was trying to break through the rear window when the employees caught it, Mills said in the report. While inside the deer caused interior damage, including ripped upholstery.

Patch visited the restaurant Friday morning and employees said that the broken window has already been replaced.

While none of the damage is covered by insurance, Mills said that compared to Superstorm Sandy’s damage in 2012 the deer was not as much of an issue.

“A year ago we had five feet of water in the place,” Mills said in the report. “I don’t have a problem with the deer.”
