Monster Truck Jam or Russian Ballet? Loudon Wainwright or Maple Syrup?

Activities and entertainment options for your weekend are varied and bountiful. Check out this line-up...

  • Where: Silvermine Arts Center, 1037 Silvermine Rd., New Canaan
  • When: Sunday, 4 p.m. (snow date March 20)
  • Why go: This “lively and humorous lecture written as part of the Mark Twain Centennial Project” will aquaint the audience with interesting connections between the city, some residents and one of America’s favorite authors. For more information call 203-966-9700 or visit www.silvermineart.org

2. IMAX: "Alaska: Spirit of the Wild" and "Whales"

  • Where: The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, 10 North Water St.
  • When: "Alaska" daily at 2 p.m. through April 7; "Whales" daily at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. through May 26
  • Why go: The viewing of wild places and wild faces doesn't get any better on film or even in person, necessarily. "Alaska" won an Oscar for Best Short Subject Documentary in 1998. In "Whales" you'll see many of these wondrous marine mammals lifesize! Make it a double feature.
  • Price: $9 for adults, $8 for seniors 65+ and $6.50 for children 2-12. Aquarium members receive $2 discounts.   3. The Guitarists of Little Feat: Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett

  • Why go: Instrumental in the creation of  Little Feat’s unique sound going back 25 years, Barrere and Tackett now perform as an acoustic duo. They have also recorded with musicians including Bonnie Raitt, Taj mahal, Bob Dylan and more. For more information click here

  • Why go: Big trucks, cool stuff. “USHRA Monster Trucks including Grave Digger driven by Randy Brown, El Toro Loco driven by Joey Parnell, Air Force Afterburner driven by Damon Bradshaw, Martial Law driven by Paul Strong, Crushstation driven by Greg Winchenbach and Thrasher driven by Pat Summa!”

5. Russian National Ballet Theatre’s “Swan Lake”

  • When: Friday, 8 p.m.
  • Why go: This premiere, world-renowned ballet company is a must-see for any enthusiasts of dance, culture and art at its best.
  • Price: $45, $40, $35. The website indicates the performance is “almost sold out” and that the public should call the box office at 203254-4010 for a spot on the waiting list. 

6. Shawn Colvin and Loudon Wainwright

  • When: Saturday, 8-10 p.m.
  • Where:Quick Center, 1073 North Benson Rd., Fairfield
  • Why go: Grammy® Award winner Shawn Colvin joins the “prolific” Loudon Wainwright III for this Arts & Minds presentation. These singers/songwriters “stand out as enduring talents,” according to the Quick Center. For details on the musicians, click here.

7. Civil War Lecture Series

  • When: Sunday, 2-3:30 p.m.
  • Where:Wilton Library
  • Why go:Wilton Historical Society and Wilton Library collaborate to host “America’s Civil War: 150 Years Later,” a scholarly series. “Mediating the War,” presented by James Lundberg, “explores the role of an infant mass media in the American Civil War,” as compared to the extensive coverage of modern wars. Lundberg graduated from Connecticut College in 2000 and received his Ph.D. in History from Yale in 2009.
  • Price: Free; reservations are strongly encouraged. Reserve seats at Wilton Library or call the library at 203-762-3950. 

8. Maple Syrup Open House

  • Where: Ambler Farm, 257 Hurlbutt Street, Wilton
  • When: Saturday, 1-2 p.m.
  • Why go: This fascinating program is suitable for all ages. “Kids and families will have an opportunity to tap a tree, take the maple syrup taste test, learn about Native American, colonial and modern ways to make syrup and, of course, taste Ambler Farm's very own maple syrup over vanilla ice cream.” Bottles of Ambler’s maple syrup will be available for sale. Walk-ins welcome.
  • Price: Free
