Gone to the Dogs: Onyx, Jackson; Fostering Opportunities

  • Note from the editor. This Saturday column runs on about 18 Patch sites from Pelham to Danbury and up the coast as far as Westport. Reputable rescue groups are welcome to submit a dog they would like featured. Email Leslie.Yager@Patch.com  There's nothing we like hearing more at Patch than when a dog has been adopted by a Patch reader.

  • OPIN, affiliated with Stamford Animal Control, shares the story of Onyx, who is looking for a home:

"Just six (6) months old, Onyx is a sweet girl that can look right into your heart with her soft brown eyes.  When you meet her, you’ll know exactly what we mean.  Onyx and her brother were abandoned on the street to fend for themselves.  They stuck together protecting each other, trying to dodge cars until they were reported and picked up by Animal Control.  But, poor little Onyx suffered the worst of things.  She was hit by a car before being rescued.  She’s now on the mend.  Her type of injury will heal itself.  What sure would make Onyx feel like new, is a home to call her own, one where she’ll never be unwanted again.  Special is a perfect word to describe Onyx.

To meet Onyx, please stop down the shelter located at 201 Magee Avenue.  The shelter is open 7 days a week from 8 am to 4 pm and for your convenience is open late on Wednesday evenings, until 8 pm.  For more information call(203) 977-4437 or email Anya, Shelter Volunteer at: Anya@opinpets.org.  To see all the adoptable shelter pets, visit:  www.opinpets.org

  • Ranger is a Border Collie & Labrador Retriever Mix being fostered through Shelly's Angels in Norwalk. This weekend his is being transported up from TN where he has been fostered in a home with a 3-year old and other dogs. He was an owner surrender after a death in a family and sounds like a great guy! Click on the Petfinder link for contact information and video. Here is part of the description: "Ranger thinks he is a 43 lb lap dog. Ranger thinks he is one. He is so sweet and loves to be with you even if its on your lap :) Ranger is an owner surrender due to no fault of his own. One of his humans had passed away, and sadly the other human could no longer care for poor Ranger. He is 5 1/2 years old and only weighs 43 lbs, and is totally housebroke and LOVES to be loved. He loves his belly rubs and he is good on a leash and also riding in a car. He is great with other dogs and has been around' a 3 year old. He is good left in the house alone and is totally housebroken..."
  • SPCA of Westchester is looking for Foster families. Here's what they say:

"Each year animals arrive at the SPCA that need extra TLC due to their age or an illness or injury that requires special attention. From kittens and puppies too young to be away from their moms, to dogs and cats recovering from surgery, the SPCA counts itself lucky to have foster families willing to come to the aid of our shelter animals.  While some animals may not be too young to stay at the shelter and are not recovering from an injury, they may be showing signs of stress and depression which is also why fostering is so valuable.

If you think you would like to open your home and your heart to a special needs animal, please complete the application(s) below. The SPCA takes care of all expenses while an animal is in foster care - including food and veterinary care! Read on to learn about a darling young pup who could use a good friend while he recovers."

SPCA of Westchester has a no-kill policy. Find out more on their website.
