If you’re looking for ways to entertain the kids this week, then you’ve come to the right place. From maple sugar, to parades, to Lego clubs, this week’s planner brings you a wide array of family-friendly events in the Norwalk area.
• FAM JAM IN THE A.M. - Friday
Where/When: Jam, Fridays through April 15, 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Why Go: Fam Jam is open to children of any age, so it’s perfect for families with more than one child. Plus, there is no planning or long-term commitment necessary. What does the workshop look like? According to Web site, “Rotating artists throughout the session share their music as you and your child explore the art terrain.”
Pricing: Sign-up for the whole session for $221, or walk-in for $35 a class, $10 for siblings
• SAP TO SUGAR (Family Campfire & Maple Syrup Demonstration) - Saturday
Where/When: Westport’s , Saturday, March 5, 1 p.m., rain or shine!
Why Go: They encourage you to “Enjoy a winter campfire with some hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows to take the chill off. Since the sap is rising in the sugar maple trees, spring can't be far off. Find out how tree sap becomes liquid gold - maple syrup. Experience the sweet taste of spring.” Hot chocolate and marshmallows? Works for me! If Saturday is too busy for you to attend this maple sugaring event, see "Maple Sugar Sunday" below. (Also, see "Maple Sap's About to Run: Bring Your Sweet Tooth")
Pricing: $8 for members, $10 for non-members
• LEARN ABOUT IRELAND AND MAKE YOUR OWN BAGPIPES - Saturday
Where/When: , Saturday, March 5, 2 p.m.
Why Go: Nothing says St. Patrick’s Day like bagpipes, and at this drop-in workshop, children will have the chance to “listen to and construct their own.”
Pricing: Free with admission
• MAPLE SUGAR SUNDAY and ACTING OUT WITH MS. KAREN - Sunday
Where/When: , Sunday, March 6, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., rain or shine!
Why Go: This event provides tons of fun for the whole family. From learning about maple sugaring, to creating a craft, to enjoying the pancake breakfast, you can’t go wrong. But my favorite part? If you’ve attended an “Acting Out with Ms. Karen” performance, then you know that they are reason enough to attend. She’ll make sure every child has a role in “Little Red Hood in the Wood.” (Also see "Sap to Sugar" above, and the link at the end of it to another article about maple syrup in the area.)
Pricing: Members:$5, Non-members: $10, Children 3 & under, Family Plus & Above Members: FREE
• GREENWICH ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE - Sunday
Where/When: Sunday, March 6, 2 p.m., starting at the Greenwich Town Hall, 101 Field Point Road
Why Go: As far as I can tell, this is the only St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Fairfield County, so if parades are your thing you may want to try to make it. The only bummer is that it conflicts with the Stamford Nature Center’s event.
Pricing: Free; suggested $3 donation
• CALDECOTT PARTY - Monday
Where/When: , Monday, March 7, 4 p.m.-4:45 p.m.
Why Go: They suggest that you “Join a celebration of this year’s Caldecott winner, A Sick Day for Amos McGee. The publisher, [Westporter] Simon Boughton, will kick off the party with a book reading and talk about how an award-winning picture book is made.” The party will include face painting, an art project, and music.
Pricing: Free, but books will be available for purchase
• LEGO CLUB - Wednesday
Where/When: , Wednesday, March 9, 4 p.m.-5 p.m., *registration required
Why Go: “Kids in grades K-2 learn about themes through stories and non-fiction books and then create a Lego masterpiece from the library’s lego collection.”
Pricing: Free
