Join The Westport Historical Society for an additional kayak trip this year to Chimon Island, one mile off the coast of Norwalk. Participants will paddle out in a group and land on the island for a hike and guided tour around the shore and a picnic. Enjoy the views from all around including an open meadow. The 59 acre Chimon Island is a protected island and is part of the Stewart B. McKinney Wildlife Refuge. Access is limited during the spring and summer nesting season except for a public beach on the west shore. For several weeks during the summer, US Fish and Wildlife island keepers camp on the island for continuing conservation efforts. The island has a colorful history including a resort hotel that operated during the early 1900′s but fell into disrepair and was the victim of a fire. The tour will be led by David Park, board member of the Norwalk River Watershed Association and author of “Kayaking in and around the Norwalk Islands.” Fee: $20,WHS Members: $18, To Register: 203-222-1424 Meet and launch from the Small Boat Shop at Rex Marina 144 Water Street, South Norwalk.
