Westport Historical Society Kayak Tour to Chimon Island

Join The Westport Historical Society for an additional kayak trip this year to Chimon Island, one mile off the coast of Norwalk.  Participants will paddle out in a group and land on the island for a hike and guided tour around the shore and a picnic. Enjoy the views from all around including an open meadow.  The 59 acre Chimon Island is a protected island and is part of the Stewart B. McKinney Wildlife Refuge. Access is limited during the spring and summer nesting season except for a public beach on the west shore. For several weeks during the summer, US Fish and Wildlife island keepers camp on the island for continuing conservation efforts. The island has a colorful history including a resort hotel that operated during the early 1900′s but fell into disrepair and was the victim of a fire.
