Barks and Beer at SoNo Marketplace is a Big Success

Bully Breed Rescue's fundraiser on Saturday coincided with the soft opening of The Farm Terrace Beer Garden.

There was a beautiful day on tap for the Barks and Beer fundraiser at SoNo Marketplace on Saturday. The weather cooperated and so did the sweet dogs in the care of Bully Breed Rescue (BBR).

Jim and Christina Millea, of Naugatuck, enjoyed the warm afternoon, along with "Momma," a former bait dog they are fostering for BBR.

Momma bears the scars of dogfighting, but harbors no grudges from the cruelty she suffered. Momma is available for adoption, but for now she is happily ensconced in her foster home. The Milleas' male pit bull, Kobe, welcomed Momma into the family and, like proud parents, the Milleas shared photos of Kobe and Momma. Jim Millea even has a pit bull tattoo on his shoulder.

The passion that BBR volunteers and foster families have for pit bull type dogs is fierce. Their goal, in addition to rescuing and re-homing dogs, is to break through the misconceptions surrounding these dogs. Some of their t-shirts have slogans like, "Ban Stupid People," "Keep Calm and Rescue Pit Bulls," and "Kiss My Pit." In fact, on YouTube, photos of BBR's adoptable dogs scroll along the screen to John Mayer's "Waiting on the World to Change."

More than one passerby met Momma on Saturday and remarked about her sweet nature. After showering Dennis Perrelli of Branford with kisses, Momma enjoyed belly rubs from the volunteers and snuggles from BBR's Heidi Lueders.

For a $5.00 ticket, patrons of The Farm Terrace Beer Garden got a free beer – both a bargain and a donation to BBR.
