Arctic 30 Captain, Peter Willcox, Out on Bail from Russian Jail

Peter Willcox has been released from jail in Russia and has written to Patch from his hotel to express thanks to everyone in Norwalk.

Patch received an encouraging update from Peter Willcox on Saturday morning, Nov. 23.

Willcox, a Norwalk resident and captain of the Greenpeace ship, the Arctic Sunrise, was arrested by the Russian Coast Guard on Sept. 19, a day after Greenpeace activists tried to scale an offshore oil platform in the Arctic. He has been jailed over two months.

"I was so impressed / happy to see the Sound Sailing fleet decorated up to free the Arctic 30.  Many many thanks to Martin. (Martin van Breems)

Yesterday,  we were detained for another 3 months, to 24 February.  But we were also give bail, which is why I am able to write you from our hotel.

Thanks to everyone in Norwalk who came out to the candle light vigil.  I saw a picture of it was I was in jail, and it was really a powerful image for me.

I have not idea when I will get back to Norwalk.  It feels like sooner than later.  We are having a meeting with our lawyers tonight or tomorrow.  Hopefully I will know more soon.

Best wishes,
Peter Willcox"
