5 Things You Need to Know About Norwalk: April 6

Here's your guide to today.

  1. Today is the first Wednesday in April. That means it’s the American Heart Association’s National Start! Walking Day. The association hopes to help Americans become more physically active by encouraging them to walk at least 30 minutes. To get you started, join Mayor Richard A. Moccia and other employees of the city for a 30 minute walk at the City Hall track tomorrow at 10 a.m. Or, if you would prefer to walk with a friend, check out this list of walking maps that the city provides.
  2. If you missed the recent Touch a Shark exhibit, you’ll be happy to know that you’ll have another chance to discover what a shark’s skin feels like. The exhibit will revisit the Aquarium Saturday, April 16 through Sunday, April 24. Check out for a unique view of this exhibit.
  3. The Norwalk Senior Center’s 40th anniversary fundraiser is off to a great start, having just received a $5,000 sponsorship from AT&T. This is good news for the center, which serves over 200 people per day. Prior to this donation, staff at the center were taking two furlough days a month to keep the center operating smoothly despite a decline in charitable contributions. The 40th anniversary celebration will take place May 13.
  4. Calling all trivia buffs:  Check out the premier of WTF, Wednesday Trivia Freakout, at SoNo, tonight and every Wednesday at 8 p.m. They’re featuring cash prizes and other giveaways and offering special drink specials including $3 Bud Light Drafts and $4 Heineken Bottles. If Wednesday doesn’t work for you, Rowley’s offers Monday Night Trivia hosted by Bryan Dale of Fake ID, and O’Neill’s features Pub Trivia on Tuesday nights.
  5. Norwalk’s coastline will soon be a little bit safer thanks to a grant the city and fire departments have been given as part of an Area Maritime Protection Plan. This grant will allow for the purchase of a Fire Boat with Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear and Explosive Detection Capabilities. They have already started to receive design and construction proposals and hope to have the boat completed by late summer.
