Why: To celebrate the City of Norwalk’s winning the “100 Best Communities for Young People” designation by the America’s Promise Alliance.
Norwalk builds networks and relationships that support learning and create opportunities for young people while strengthening the community. To help inspire area residents and stakeholders to value all Norwalk service providers, Carver nominated and won twice for the City of Norwalk (in both 2010 and 2011) the honor of being named among the nation’s “100 Best Communities for Young People” by the Washington DC-based America’s Promise Alliance. Last year, to celebrate this national distinction, we organized a Summit event for the city’s service providers to show Norwalk youth all the opportunities that are available to them. For this year’s Summit, Norwalk youth will show their peers, service providers and other adults in attendance all that they have to offer the community.
From 4-5PM, on display in the East Campus Atrium will be a robotics project created by Ponus Middle School students; Norwalk High School students exhibiting their handmade jewelry; chess games being played; video and photography projects on display; cartoon drawing and drawings completed during the year being displayed; and other projects.
From 5-6PM, during the formal award ceremony in the East Campus Atrium theater, performances will include two sisters singing; Latin Dancers from Roton Middle School; several other middle and high school dance performances; and a Carver elementary student performing on the violin.
The 100 Best Communities for Young People presented by ING is a signature initiative of America’s Promise Alliance and an important part of the Grad Nation campaign. Each year, America’s Promise and ING celebrate 100 deserving communities who effectively provide their youth with the Five Promises and work to increase graduation rates. Winning communities come from all across the country and are addressing the unique challenges they face. Under the leadership of Founding Chairman General Colin Powell and current Chair Alma Powell, the America’s Promise Alliance has become the nation’s largest partnership dedicated to improving the lives of young people.
