Lt. Paul Vinett said vital signs were detected for both victims at Norwalk Hospital. Deputy Fire Chief Gino Gatto said both remained unconscious.

Police received a 911 call about the incident at 4:51 p.m.

The car drove off a parking lot on the east end of the park and went into the water at the city's docks. The car had to get over a wall of boulders laid along the edge of the parking lot that acts as a bulkhead to reach the water.

Gatto said nine Norwalk firefighters jumped in the water to remove the car's occupants, using a halligan tool to bust out the rear window. An off-duty Stamford firefighter who was working on his boat was already in the water and attempting a rescue when Norwalk fire companies arrived.

Both occupants were pulled onto a dock not breathing.

Divers later attached a strap to the submerged car, a four-door Subaru, and it was brought up by a heavy-duty wrecker provided by Nat's Garage.

Police spoke with several witnesses to the incident, but could provide no immediate explanation why it occurred. There was also no information about who the victims are.

Saturday evening, detectives began examining the car and the scene.

The following members of the Norwalk Fire Dept. entered the water and brought the car's occupants to the surface:

Capt. Adam Markowitz, Lt. Steve Papadopoulos, Firefighters Elefterios Petrides, James Lyons, Hector Ramirez, Anthony O'Marra, Pat St. Onge, Marty O'Marra and David Dustin. The off-duty Stamford Firefighter was Tom Elles.
