Neither Police Sgt.'s Bones Nor Bike Broken in Accident Friday

Norwalk Police Sgt. Joseph Moquin, commander of the motorcycle squad, was badly bruised but will be back to work, and that $23,000 motorcycle he was riding is in better shape than him.

A Norwalk Police sergeant initially said to have broken his ankle during a motorcycle accident Friday morning instead has a severe bruise.

The report on Sgt. Joseph Moquin’s condition was given Monday afternoon by Police Chief Harry W. Rilling at the start of a Police Commission meeting. Rilling said he had just finished speaking with Moquin by phone, and that he will return to work next Monday on a light-duty schedule.

In a news release, state police said Moquin was riding northbound on the Wilbur Cross Parkway at exit 59 when sun glare caused traffic in front of him to brake abruptly. It said Moquin swerved to avoid a Chevrolet Trailblazer stopped in front of him, but struck the vehicle’s left rear bumper.

Rilling said Moquin was able to lay down his motorcycle so it wasn’t damaged. However, Moquin had a variety of cuts and scrapes, and was transported by ambulance to St. Raphael Hospital in New Haven.

Moquin, 44, was en route to the state Police Academy in Meriden on one of the department’s three Harley-Davidson Road King motorcycles when the accident occurred. The department formed a motorcycle squad last spring, consisting of a sergeant and two patrol officers.

The operator of the Trailblazer, Thomas Phillip of Monroe, was not injured. Damage to his vehicle was described as moderate.

Outfitted with police equipment, the bikes cost between $23,000 and $24,000, and were paid for through a U.S. Justice Department grant.

The release said Moquin was wearing a helmet and “high-visibility clothing.”

Moquin joined the police department in November 1993, and was promoted to sergeant in March 2003.

That is a promotion to the rank of Sgt, not an appointment. There is a big difference.

This story was corrected to say Moquin was promoted -- not appointed -- to sergeant. Thanks Mr. Frank.
