Everybody Wins at Trifitness Triathlon Camp Race [Video]

Twenty-three kids raced and finished the tough swim, bike and run competition

Where can you send your kids to swim, bike, run and get in shape? Answer: Trifitness Triathlon camp.

Trifitness is a Fairfield-based triathlon training center run by world class triathlete Pascale Butcher, a USA All-American since 2003. The group focuses on bringing the enjoyment of triathlon to everyone of all ages shapes and sizes. (http://www.trifitness.net/about/pascale.html)

There were two races that saw 23 participants ranging in age from 6 to 15 compete in the Saturday morning triathlon at Weston Middle School. The event was a culmination of a week's worth of training as part of the Trifitness Youth/Teen Triathlon camp.

In the first race, the group swam 100 yards, biked three miles and ran a half a mile.

Sophia Fitsimonds, 9, overcame a slow change over from swim to bike - she had trouble getting her running shoes on - to catch Maddie Gordon, 11, in the last 100 yards to win the 6-12 year old race. Her time was 21:31.

Maddie Gordon finished in 21:34, followed by third-place finisher Madisen McCreesh, 10, at 21:39. Only eight seconds separated the first three finishers. The first boy to cross the finish line was Xavier Ramos, 8, in a time of 22:42.

In the 13-15 race, it was an all-boy affair. Callum Breene, 14, was the first to exit the pool, followed shortly by Chris Hume, 15. Eventual winner, Cathal Long, 15 of Trinidad and Tobago, had several hundred yards to make up once he mounted his bike.

This race consisted of a 200-yard swim, six-mile bike and a one-mile run.

Long, who came to the camp because of the reputation of Butcher and Trifitness, finished the over seven-mile race in 31:06, 1:11 ahead of second-place finisher Callum Breene, 14, and 1:26 ahead of David Wilson, 14, who finished third.

Long passed early leader Callum Breene on just the second lap of the six-lap bike course. He clocked his miles on the bike in a 4:06 per mile pace or 13 miles per hour. He also finished the race with a sub-six-minute mile run.

All in all everyone, no matter how big or how small, walked away with a certificate, a medal and a smile, which is the foundation of Trifitness camp: everyone can compete.

The next youth and teen summer camp to be held at Weston Middle School is set for Aug. 1-5.

Spaces are still available, so if your child likes to swim, bike and run, send them on over to the Trifitness camp to get in great shape and learn to enjoy what can be a lifelong sport.
