The City of Norwalk has reportedly received bids for the construction of the new Central Fire Station located at 121 Connecticut Avenue, a capital project currently estimated at $16 million.

According to a report in The Hour of Norwalk, more than 70 contractors submitted bids for various aspects of the project, which calls for the construction of a new three-story, 30,000-square-foot firehouse to replace the current “outdated” Charles A. Volk Fire Station, built in the 1960s. The project has reportedly been divided into multiple bid packages.

The bids will be reviewed by Newfield Construction, Inc., the construction manager hired to oversee the project, before being sent to the Common Council (via the council's Land Use and Building Management Committee) and the Norwalk Facilities Construction Committee for review and final approval, according to the report.

The City hopes to complete demolition of the old firehouse by March and start new construction in April, according to the report. Meanwhile the firefighters and equipment have been temporarily relocated to the Fire Support Services Facility on Fairfield Avenue.
